BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin

The appearance of wrinkles, whether static (wrinkles seen at rest) or dynamic (wrinkles seen when smiling or frowning) come naturally as we age. Using neuromodulator injections (BOTOX®, Dysport®‎, or Xeomin®‎), board-certified facial plastic surgeon Scott Shadfar, MD can help soften wrinkles, sculpt the brow, or refresh the upper third of the face.

The Technique

Injections with neuromodulators are performed in the office. Dr. Shadfar offers topical anesthesia creams for those patients that desire it, however most patients do not require any anesthesia. Based on the examination performed by Dr. Shadfar, each patient will have an individualized treatment plan. Dr. Shadfar performs all injections isolating the muscles in the area of concern, while using the fewest number of units to achieve an outstanding natural result, without an over-injected “frozen” look.

The Recovery

Following neuromodulator injections patients are free to go about their day with little to no restrictions. A cool compress is provided to patients and can be used for the first few hours after injection. Patients will notice minimal swelling around the site of each injection with some redness that fades by that evening. Infrequently, patients may experience bruising following injections. The effects of the injections are not immediate, and patients can expect to see some results by day 3-7.

BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® FAQs

What cosmetic concerns can BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® treat?

For individuals interested in non-surgical facial rejuvenation, neuromodulator injections can often provide an excellent solution. Depending on one’s unique needs and goals, BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and/or Xeomin® can be used to help improve the appearance of lines between and around the eyes, wrinkles along the forehead, and creases between the brow. Depending on various other concerns a patient may have, neuromodulator injections can often be performed in conjunction with dermal fillers for a more comprehensive non-surgical enhancement.

What is the difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin®?

Although BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are each composed of a form of botulinum toxin and used to treat many of the same aesthetic concerns, there are a few differences between the three neuromodulator injections. Key distinctions are listed below.

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic is a refined protein form of botulinum toxin that can be particularly effective for minimizing lines on the forehead, around the corners of the eyes, and between the brows. Results tend to become apparent within one week, and the effects typically last about three months.
  • Dysport® is composed with fewer proteins than BOTOX® Cosmetic, often reducing the chance of antibodies forming against it when injected. Frequently a great option for reducing vertical creases between the brow, the effects of this neuromodulator often start to become noticeable after 48 hours and tend to last anywhere around three months.
  • Xeomin® has no additives, again reducing the possibility of antibodies forming against it once the solution is introduced into the body. Often considered an excellent treatment for diminishing frown lines, Xeomin® results generally appear within one week of injection and usually last approximately three months.

It is important to note that this information is a general rule of thumb, and some individuals may find that one neuromodulator yields superior and/or longer-lasting results for a particular concern than another. Dr. Shadfar is highly experienced in each injectable, and he can help determine which technique would be most appropriate for one’s specific needs and desires.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and/or Xeomin® generally takes about 30 minutes, depending on the number of concerns being addressed. In fact, many of Dr. Shadfar’s patients schedule their visit during their lunchbreak and return to normal daily activities right away.

Are there any side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or Xeomin®?

Side effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® may include some mild swelling and/or redness in the treatment area, but these symptoms should dissipate relatively quickly. Dr. Shadfar’s careful approach to injectable treatments helps to limit—or even prevent—any bruising or discomfort that might occur, and the majority of patients resume regular daily routines immediately.

Who should perform my BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® injections?

Not everyone who offers injectables is a medical doctor, so researching the background, credentials, and skill of a potential provider before proceeding with treatment is extremely important. As a Fellowship-trained, double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Shadfar has an extensive understanding of the skin and muscle tissues of the face. Combined with his eye for facial balance and aesthetics, he uses this anatomical knowledge to deliver injectables in the safest, most effective manner possible. Dr. Shadfar has administered BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® injections for many years, and his refined technique yields exceptionally natural-looking results with little to no side effects or downtime.
